I was born in London in December 1815. My father Lord Byron was a renowned poet but his acts of violence against my mother forced him to leave us quickly. I never saw him again. I was fond of mathematics very early and I benefited from a thorough education in science, which was quite unusual at the time for a girl raised in a noble family.
My pregnancies weakened my health and kept me away from my passion for mathematics but I had the chance to work on Charles Babbage's calculating machines, from which I designed the first algorithm in the world, the first computer program.
I had to gamble and get into debt in order to subsidize my work, and despite the design of a system that should have allowed me to enrich myself in the game, I lost everything.
A cancer of the uterus killed me at 36 years old. My name fell into oblivion until a computer language was named after me: Ada.

I am Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, but I am more often called Ada Lovelace.
