I became a soprano to accompany my brother William, a pianist. When he got passionate about astronomy, I polished the mirrors of his telescopes and learned to check all his calculations. When he became the official telescope manufacturer for the British Crown, I ran the house and managed his bookkeeping. In 1785, I built with him the first 40-foot telescope. Relaying him to his observation post, I discovered 8 comets, galaxies and star clusters. I finally corrected the coordinates of more than 2500 luminaries published in a catalog under the name of my brother.
I lived 97 years, and was the first woman in the world to receive a salary as a scientist: 50 pounds a year.

I have always lived only as William Herschel's sister: the very devoted Caroline.
